Over a two-year period, our five courses offer a comprehensive whitewater experience in Washington, DC. Even more, you have the option to go at your own pace, as well as unlimited practice at our free weekly practice nights. All equipment is provided, and we take a hands-on approach, often standing in the water next to you and moving your body for you.
Our friendly community of paddlers has developed over the years, making you lifelong friends and paddling buddies. Our friendly, non-intimidating approach has made us the top whitewater program in the region, and many students have found this their best decision since moving to DC.
Courses include: kayak, paddle, personal floatation device (PFD), skirt, and helmet. Students must be punctual and fully prepared for participation.

BEGINNER WHITEWATER 101
FUNdamentals Indoors
Develop a solid foundation in two 2-hour INDOOR classes. We’ll teach proper equipment fit and boat outfitting, comfort underwater, how to exit the kayak after a capsize, and how to roll the kayak. You’ll work on hip snaps, bow rescues, bracing, and rolling techniques. Be sure to leave time for a social dinner after the lesson!
BEGINNER WHITEWATER 102
Paddle Strokes & Rolling
This intensive four-hour class is also on flat water and teaches you the fundamental strokes that turn and propel the kayak and gives you the tools you need to “bombproof” your roll in preparation for WW 103. (Pick from multiple dates offered for your Lesson)

Moving Water
Experience a three-hour trip on the Potomac River at Riley’s Lock, where you’ll listen for evening sounds like owls and bull frogs. These trips are offered during full or nearly full moons, and witnessing a moonrise from a kayak is a breathtaking experience. Bring a Red Glowstick
BEGINNER WHITEWATER 104
Trip Leading
Experience a four-hour whitewater adventure in Mather Gorge, Potomac, focusing on responsible group management and river communication. Learn to read water and pick good lines with an instructor, available on multiple dates.

The Whitewater Membership Package offers weekly kayaking practice for skill development and social setting, with beginner and gear-bringing students attending one session per week. WW 102 attendance required prior to participation.

Private Instruction
Private lessons are ideal for those with schedule constraints or those seeking concentrated instruction. Our experienced instructors analyze technique and help master skills, focusing on fundamentals, advanced strokes, moves, surfing, and more. These lessons are available on weekdays and are designed to enhance group instruction, not replace it.

Can I just sign up for a single tour or do I have to purchase the complete package?
Yes! The package is a better value if you were to do all of the trips, but you can sign up for a single tour, if desired. Just go to our registration page and you can purchase a single trip.
Do I have to do the trips in any specific order?
No! You can do any trip at any time—no specific order required! : )
Is there a time limit, or can I do all five trips in a sprint?
Yes! You can do all five trips as quickly as you’d like. Alternately, if you’d like to stretch them out, you can take up to two years to complete them all. We’re flexible and it’s up to you!
